Objectives

After finishing this unit, students will be able to

● talk about some psychological issues and psychological health

● get an idea of the overall organization of both passages

● learn to use key word and expressions

● adopt the reading skill Drawing Conclusions while reading

● learn to write a passage based on the graph (table)

 

I. Listen and talk (2 periods)

Teaching Steps:    

Step1  Greetings and Presentation 10M)(class and individual

1.  Are you feeling really sad, tired, and worried most of the time?

2.Are these feeling lasting more than a few days?

3. Do you think psychological health is important?

Step 2  Lead-in (Listen twice and fill in the missing words, then check Ss’ answers )  10M(class and individual )

Step 3 Sample Dialogue 1 15minutes(class and pair work)

1. Listen to the dialogue and get to know the content of the dialogue.

2. Listen to the tape once again and answer the questions

1) Have you been to the health clinic?

2) What is therapy?

3. Read and follow the tape and explain some of the language points

1. clinic: adj. 诊所的, 临床的  n. 临诊医师, 门诊医师[心理学家]

Step 4 Communicative task I   15M(group work)

1. Practise dialogue 1 in pairs (partners)

2. Communicative tasks

  Listen to the tape and then make a dialogue according to the language situation given by task 1

1)Did you ask the doctor about the cause of your depression?

2)Maybe you’re spending too much time on your studies.

4. Work in groups  (Row 1&2, Row 3&4, Row 5&6 )

5. Ask 2 groups to come and act out their dialogue

Step 5  Sample Dialogue 2 15minutes(class and pair work)

1. Listen to the dialogue and get to know the content of the dialogue.

2. Listen to the tape once again and answer the questions

1) How to ease your pressure?

2) Do you need the teacher’s encouragement?

3. Read and follow the tape and explain some of the language points

Read and practice the dialogues and make free dialogue in groups.

Passage A (2 periods)

Is It Healthy to Be a Football Supporter?

Step 1 Greetings and a brief revision ( 3-5M ) (pair work or group work)

Ask one or two pairs(groups) to act out their own dialogue about culture

Step 2  Pre-reading 5M(group discussion)

1. What do you know about die-hard football fans?

2. Do you have any favorite sports or other recreational activities?

3. What is your attitude toward football fans?

Step 3  Skimming 10M(individual and class work)

Read passage A within 8 minutes and try to get the main idea of the passage.

Reference keys: Die-hard football fans are often portrayed as lonely misfits, but a study has revealed that football fans suffer fewer bouts of depression and alienation than people who never watch the game.

Step 4  Scanning 20M(class work)

Discuss in groups and divide the passage into parts and get the main idea of each part.

Step 5  Review

Retell the passage  (5-8M)

General writing: Write a short passage of 120 words or so on the topic “Sports and Psychological Health.”

Step 2  Pre-reading 5M(group discussion)

1. What kind of person do you think is a healthy person?

2. Where does pressure usually come from? Give examples.

3. Do you think that a working man is a happier, healthier man? Why or why not?

Step 3  Skimming 10M(individual and class work)

Read passage A within 8 minutes and try to get the main idea of the passage.

Do the exercise on page 130 and check the Ss’ comprehension.

Step 4  Scanning 20M(class work)

Discuss in groups and divide the passage into parts and get the main idea of each part.

Practical writing: Suppose you are an office manager. You got a letter from your customer, Mr Andi on 15 March, 2003, complaining about one of your employees for his offensive behavior. Write a letter of apology in reply.
