Objectives

After finishing this unit, students will be able to

talk about their hopes for the future and their future life

● get an idea of the overall organization of both passages

● learn to use key word and expressions

● adopt the reading skill Identifying Implied Main Ideas in Paragraphs while reading

● learn to compose an expository essay

 

I. Listen and talk (2 periods)

Teaching Steps:    

Step1  Greetings and Presentation 10M)(class and individual

1. What’s your hope for the future?

2. What’s your fears for the future?

Step 2  Lead-in (Listen twice and fill in the missing words, then check Ss’ answers )  10M(class and individual )

Step 3  Sample Dialogue 1 15minutes(class and pair work)

1. Listen to the dialogue and get to know the content of the dialogue.

2. Listen to the tape once again and answer the questions

1) What is the advantage of the entry into WTO for China?

2) Can you image the employment in the future?

3. Read and follow the tape and explain some of the language points

1) domestic: domestic concerns家务; 内政         domestic troubles家庭纠纷

domestic markets国内市场                     domestic and foreign news国内外新闻

domestic goods [products]国产, 国货             domestic animals家畜

Step 4 Communicative task I   15M(group work)

1. Practise dialogue 1 in pairs (partners)

  Listen to the tape and then make a dialogue according to the language situation given by task 1

5. Ask 2 groups to come and act out their dialogue

Passage A (2 periods)

Facing the Fears of Retirement

Step 1 Greetings and a brief revision ( 3-5M ) (pair work or group work)

Ask one or two pairs (groups) to act out their own dialogue about culture

Step 2  Pre-reading 5M(group discussion)

1. What’s your first reaction to the word “retirement”, and why?

2. Look at the people around you who have already retired. Are they happy?Why or why not?

3. What challenges do you think they may face after retirement?

Step 3  Skimming 10M(individual and class work)

Read passage A within 8 minutes and try to get the main idea of the passage.

Reference keys: This article addresses the reluctance of many business owners to engage in succession planning. It states that there are three main reasons why business owners do not want to retire from their business: firstly, a fear of an uncertain future, secondly, a fear of financial loss, and lastly, a fear of losing their personal identity. The author states that because of these fears, succession planning is often a painful experience for both the retiree and the new business owners, involving a great deal of unnecessary interpersonal conflicts and negative emotions.

Step 4  Scanning 20M(class work)

Discuss in groups and divide the passage into parts and get the main idea of each part.

General writing: Write a short passage of 120 words or so on the topic “Life after Retirement” telling about the retirement life of a relative or someone you know quite well.

Passage B (2 periods)

1. Where do you think old people’s pensions mainly come from?

2. What would happen to pensions if we had fewer people in the next generation?

3. What should we do now to maintain our standard of living after retirement?

Read passage A within 8 minutes and try to get the main idea of the passage.

Do the exercise on page 155 and check the Ss’ comprehension.

Step 4  Scanning 20M(class work)

Discuss in groups and divide the passage into parts and get the main idea of each part.

Step 6 Language focus

1. monthly: done, happening once a month or every month

  e.g. The monthly meeting of the company will be cancelled because of the accident.

  payable, valid or calculated for one month

e.g. He gets a monthly income of $8000, which allows him to lead a comfortable life in the country side.

2. invest: use to buy shares, property, etc. in order to earn interest or bring profit

e.g. Your bank manager has the duty to advise you where to invest your money.

3. scrape together: gather with difficulty by putting small amounts together.

e.g. If we want to rent a big apartment in the capital city, we must scrape together enough to pay the deposit.

4. certify: to declare that is correct or true, esp. after some kind of test

e.g. I certify that I witnessed the signing of this document.

5. sink in: 1) of words, etc be fully understood

e.g. The news was such a shock; it still hasn’t really sunk in yet.

2) enter a solid through the surface

e.g. If the ink sinks in it’ll be hard to remove the mark from the cloth.

6. count on: rely on with confidence

e.g. Whenever we need help, she can always be counted on for support.

7. account for: be the explanation of sth.

e.g. The defendant couldn’t account for the fact that the money was found in his house.

8. flip: quick light blow or movement, esp one that tosses sth

e.g. They flopped a coin to decide who would go first.

9. aggressive: offensive

e.g. This country is regarded as an aggressive nation which threatens world peace.

10. set aside: save or keep for a particular purpose

e.g. She decided to set aside a little money each week for her son to study abroad.
